Amid the whole drama with the US authorities, Huawei appears to be on track to release its own operating system as early as August. Reports from news outlet Global Times confirm that Huawei will release HongMeng OS in China while the overseas version will be called Oak OS. Huawei consumer business CEO Richard Yu confirmed that the company's new OS will be ready by this fall.
Previously, Huawei filled a trademark application with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) for the HUAWEI ARK OS, HUAWEI ARK, ARK and ARK OS names. Now it seems the company is segmenting its approach for it’s home and away markets.
In related news, Google has reportedly issued a statement to the US government where it outlines the potential safety risks of Huawei devices running on a new proprietary operating system. Chief among them is the possibility of security breaches given that Huawei devices won’t be able to receive security updates directly from Google.
