Hello, and welcome to a post-Memorial Day weekend edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s pop-culture news roundup. What’s in store today? First up, Disney’s Aladdin had a pretty big weekend at the box office. Also, Netflix picked up a couple of big movies at the Cannes Film Festival, and there might be another Alien prequel coming. Here we go!

Aladdin Made $110 Million-Plus at the Box Office This Weekend

Looks like the genie granted Disney’s wish. The studio’s live-action remake of Aladdin scored big at the box office over Memorial Day weekend, bringing in an estimated $112.7 million domestically. It's the fifth biggest opening weekend for the holiday. (Disney also holds the No. 1 spot in that category for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which earned nearly $140 million when it opened in 2007.) The Guy Ritchie-directed film did much better than Disney’s expectations, which were in the range of $75 million to $85 million. John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum came in second after Aladdin.

Netflix Just Bought a Cannes Winner

The Cannes Film Festival is over and has declared its winners. First up: the Palme d'Or went to Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho's dark drama Parasite. The Grand Prix, essentially the festival’s award for second place, went to director Mati Diop’s Atlantics. Netflix picked up Diop’s movie, about construction workers who decide to travel the ocean for a better future, for distribution. The streaming service also nabbed the animated feature I Lost My Body.

Ridley Scott Might Still Be Working on Another Alien Prequel

Buried deep in a recent Variety piece on the 40th anniversary of Alien was this nugget: Director Ridley Scott is apparently still working on a third prequel to the film. The piece doesn’t have many details, but it notes that following 2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s Alien: Covenant, “a third prequel, which [Scott] will direct, is in the script phase.”

Here’s the Trailer for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

In other news out of Cannes, writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opened to largely positive reviews at the festival. There’s also a new trailer for the film, which you can watch below.
